Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q's)
Q: HOW MUCH DO YOUR PROGRAMS COST?
A: Program fees vary depending on the program, eligibility for funding, and student awards. WBF student advisors will help you explore options.
We have a few different funding options to cover the cost of tuition and some living expenses to students who qualify. Our funding advisor works with each accepted student individually to obtain as much funding as possible.
Q: IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT FOR YOUR PROGRAMS?
A: There is no age limit for our programs. What is required is your ability to handle the physical and mental demands of the training program and occupation.
Q: WHERE DOES WBF OFFER PROGRAMMING?
A: WBF offers a variety of training programs in Edmonton and Fort McMurray. We've also recently expanded our Journeywoman Start program to Red Deer and Grande Prairie.
Q: WILL I BE ABLE TO GO TO WORK RIGHT AFTER MY PROGRAM?
A: While we do not guarantee employment after the completion of our programs, we do work with each graduate to find employment opportunities. Our programs have a consistent 90% employment rate.
Q: DO I NEED TO HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE IN THE TRADES OR DRIVING OCCUPATIONS IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR YOUR PROGRAMS?
A: Experience is not required for most programs but is considered an asset. Many women applying for our Journeywoman Start program find great value in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity to get a feel for what it’s like to work with tradespeople and be on a job site.
Q: DO I NEED TO ATTEND AN INFORMATION SESSION BEFORE APPLYING TO A PROGRAM?
A: Information sessions gives you an opportunity to learn about the variety of Women Building Futures programs, the application process, and ask questions of an Admissions Advisor.
You do not have to attend an information session, although we highly recommend attending them. In our experience women who attend have a much higher rate of success in applying for our programs and entering their trade of choice.
Q. I'M NOT FROM EDMONTON, WHERE WILL I LIVE WHILE I'M IN THE PROGRAM?
A: WBF has 42 units of affordable housing for students; 18 of these units are for women with children. We work with out-of-town students to place them in these units, or to help find other suitable housing to meet their needs while enrolled in the WBF program.
Q. ARE YOUR PROGRAMS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR WOMEN?
A. We recognize that the term “women” may not include diverse identities. We welcome and strive to create an inclusive environment for all transgender, non-binary, and agender persons through assessment, training, job placement, and job retention support.
